Summary

The spirits of Nordic folklore come calling in this entrancing tale of family secrets and ancient mysteries by the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Haunting of Brynn Wilder。

In Metsan Valo, her family home on Lake Superior, Anni Halla’s beloved grandmother has died。 Among her fond memories, what Anni remembers most vividly is her grandmother’s eerie yet enchanting storytelling。 By firelight she spun tall tales of spirits in the nearby forest and waters who could heal—or harm—on a whim。 But of course those were only stories…

The reading of the will now occasions a family reunion。 Anni and her twin brother, their almost otherworldly mother, and relatives Anni hasn’t seen in forever—some with good reason—are all brought back together under one roof that strains to hold all their tension。 But it’s not just Annie’s family who is unsettled。 Whispers wind through the woods。 Laughter bursts from bubbling streams。 Raps from unseen hands rupture on the walls。 Fireflies swarm and nightmares stir。 With each odd occurrence, Anni fears that her return has invited less a welcoming and more a warning。

When another tragedy strikes near home, Anni must dive headfirst into the mysterious happenings to discover the truth about her home, her family, and the wooded island’s ancient lore。 Plunging into the past may be the only way to save her family from whatever bedevils Metsan Valo。

Thank you to Netgalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。I should start by saying that I read Daughters of the Lake, which is by the same author and set in the same place, but I have not yet read the author's second book in this series。 However, some of the characters were familiar and I had the feeling that I was reuniting with old friends。Where Daughters of the Lake was a chilling ghost story, The Keepers of Metsan Valo is steeped in Thank you to Netgalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。I should start by saying that I read Daughters of the Lake, which is by the same author and set in the same place, but I have not yet read the author's second book in this series。 However, some of the characters were familiar and I had the feeling that I was reuniting with old friends。Where Daughters of the Lake was a chilling ghost story, The Keepers of Metsan Valo is steeped in local folklore and seems more of an homage to Nordic folktales than a haunting tale, per se。This author's work is easy to read and I enjoyed the direct dialogue and frankness of the characters。 I do think that this novel lacked a bit of the creepy atmosphere that usually resonates in a gothic mystery。Still an enjoyable read, 3。5 stars from me。 。。。more

Family strength and heritage The story revolves around the Hallla family during a time of transition。 The characters are vibrant and relatable。 I have read all of Ms。 Webb’s books and this is my favorite。 A wonderful story of family love and forgiveness。

Out of all of Webb's books, this one is my favourite so far。 Her writing is always extremely atmospheric and it makes you feels transported to a place。 It was particularly effective in this book。We visit both the (fictional) town of Wharton and (also fictional) Ile de Colette, by the shore of the (very real) Lake Superior, which is a setting Webb has used a couple of times already, so we get to meet a few old friends as well as our protagonist and her family。 Webb's books are usually about death Out of all of Webb's books, this one is my favourite so far。 Her writing is always extremely atmospheric and it makes you feels transported to a place。 It was particularly effective in this book。We visit both the (fictional) town of Wharton and (also fictional) Ile de Colette, by the shore of the (very real) Lake Superior, which is a setting Webb has used a couple of times already, so we get to meet a few old friends as well as our protagonist and her family。 Webb's books are usually about death and grief, and a middle-aged woman at a crossroads in life, trying to figure out what's next。 This time, Annie just lost her grandmother, the matriarch of the family, a very rich woman who owned a property in the island that includes a large forest and a house, Metsan Valo。 I wish we'd explored the forest a little more, but I loved spending time in the house and its surroundings。Webb's books always play with a supernatural element, usually ghosts。 This time she decided to explore her Finnish roots and besides ghosts, we also get to know the local magic folk, the Väki, brought to Lake Superior by Annie's ancestors。 They create some problems, to say the least。These books are very comforting for a cosy autumn read。 The stakes are never very high, not because awful things don't happen, but because everything usually ends up alright in the end。 There is usually a big romance element in her books, but in this one, it's only incidental。 It focuses entirely on Annie's relationship with her family and the odd things that are happening at her ancestral home。 Strongly recommended! 。。。more

Anni has always known she was kindred to her grandmother。 Both saw the forest beyond her home as a place to be honored and revered。 The passing of her grandmother presents her with a gift she’s not sure she wants or deserves。 Metsan Valo enchants and haunts。 Anni has never feared the place until her grandmother dies and the reading of the will will reveal more than she, her brother and mother expect。 Happy reading

Theo and AnnieMetsan Valo is an amazing place, beautiful and mysterious。 What I love was that Annie and Theo and so intense in their feelings for their grandmother。 Annie was the perfect choice for an amazing keeper。

I was very disappointed in this one。 It had so much potential in the supernatural/folklore department that, ultimately, never felt fleshed out。 I was really enjoying the beginning but somewhere about two thirds of the way through it really stalled out, and then just fell flat and rushed at the finish。

Intriguing book to say the least。 Definitely not on my top list of books but it wasn't terrible in the least。 Only reason I didn't put it at the top was because it never went into more detail about the little folk, even though everything that is happening is because of them。 I feel like for such an important aspect of the book, it was very well explained。 Other than that, fantastic read! Enjoyed this bookGot lost in the storyline about a legacy being passed down thru time。 Also gives a sense of all the universe work when you think about coincidence。 Things happen for a reason。

Not as strong as Daughter of the Lake, which is currently my favorite amongst Metsan and Brynn Wilder。 However, I have a strong family connection to the plot, as I also have a Finnish Mummu so I especially enjoyed her place in the plot and the way her character was drawn。

Kimberly

Anticlimactic。 Felt unfinished。 Falls short of what I expected from Webb。

A Surprising Gem!I am not sure what attracted me to this book, but something did I am happy for it! Filled with folklore (which I love), unique, well crafted characters, a bit of paranormal, and just a hint of romance! I am off to look for another book by this author!

Good。Interesting。Moody。Everything tied ip in a nice, happy bow at the end。 Although I think I would have preferred a spooky cliffhanger。Full review coming soon。

I enjoyed this story, it may not have been as spooky as her other books but still a good story that kept me guessing as to what was really going on until the end! More family drama than ghost story。 I wish it had been scarier。 But it did grab me from the start and I thought it was a good story。Xe Sands as always does a fabulous job at the narration and brought every character to life!Overall a good book just not as spooky as her previous books。3 ½ stars
